Help Fireflies
You do not need to transform your whole property to make a difference.
A darker corner, a little leaf litter, fewer chemicals, and some patience
can help create better conditions for fireflies.
Start Small
Firefly-friendly habitat is usually less about adding more and more about
leaving a few useful things alone.
Keep Some Areas Dark
Turn off unnecessary outdoor lights when you can. When lighting is needed,
use warm, shielded light and avoid illuminating the entire yard.
Leave Some Natural Cover
Keep leaf litter, taller grass, native plants, fallen branches, or other
undisturbed habitat in at least part of the property.
Protect Damp, Shaded Places
Moist soil, woodland edges, low areas, and shaded corners can provide
important shelter and habitat through different stages of a firefly’s life.
Reduce Broad Pesticide Use
Avoid treating the entire yard “just in case.” Use targeted pest control
only when needed and remember that fireflies spend much of their lives
close to the ground.
Support the Food Web
Grow native plants, preserve varied ground cover, and resist the urge to
eliminate every snail, slug, worm, or small insect from the landscape.
Pay Attention
Watch what is already living there before changing the space. Sometimes
the most useful habitat is the part that looks a little less tidy.
